Cyber Bullying requires your Schools attention!

Almost half of Australian parents say Cyber Bullying is their biggest fear for their children, more so than drugs and alcohol.

A survey conducted by Telstra, found 40 per cent of Australian parents said cyberbullying was their biggest worry, and 20 per cent were concerned about online safety. The results showed that cyber bullying was ahead of drugs (15 per cent) and alcohol and cigarettes (9 per cent).

In Queensland, the issue is becoming more serious with one in three Queensland parents reporting their child had been cyberbullied – above the national average of one in four.

Australian eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant said young people needed to be empowered to inspire their friends to speak out against bullying. She Stated “In short, we all need to understand that the process of ‘upstanding’ is truly outstanding,” she said.

Often those responsible for Cyber Bullying are not aware that it is a crime, and they could face criminal charges or imprisonment.

The Commonwealth legislation that governs online stalking and harassment behaviour. The crimes legislation amendment (telecommunications offences and other measures Act) – (No. 2) 2004 makes it a crime to use a carriage service to menace, harass or cause offence. The alleged individual could be found guilty under – 474.17 A (1) if:

It is important to know how to play your role as a friend, parents, student, teacher, supervisor, bystander, or organisation.

Despite being so common among Australian children only 18 per cent of Queensland parents claim to have a good understanding of what cyberbullying is. RMTO has recognised the need to not only educate our Youth about cyber bullying but also the parents and teachers.

The RMTO Cyber Bullying Course includes two components, one for students and an additional component for parents or teachers at no extra cost.
